Callbeck has Camosun golf team in the swing of things

Jarred Callbeck is a newcomer on the Camosun Chargers men's golf team but he is having a huge impact on the squad.

At last weekend's PACWEST tournament at Kwantlen College, the 23-year-old Callbeck shot rounds of 72 and 74 to capture the individual honours and also propel Camosun into first place after two events.

"It has been really fun so far,'' said Callbeck, who has also played on the University of Victoria golf team.

"The guys on the team have been great. In the first two tournaments, I have been consistent and I have hit a lot of greens.''

For his performance at Kwantlen, Callbeck was named the PACWEST Athlete of the Week.

The other members of the Camosun team are Kevin Walz, Kevin Bredy, Jared Hundza, Brady Stead and Grant Maskiewich.

On the overall individual leaderboard, Callbeck is tied for fifth place with Mitch Lock from Fraser Valley, three shots behind leader Morgan Decksheimer from Vancouver Island University.

Callbeck played in the sa国际传媒 Island Savings Open in June after Monday qualifying for the Canadian Tour event.

"It was really cool to play in that event,'' said Callbeck. "It was kind of like being a pro for a week.''

After the two PACWEST events, Camosun has a total of 1,174, six strokes ahead of Fraser Valley. Vancouver Island University is third at 1,185. The other schools competing are UBC-Okanagan, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Douglas College and Thompson Rivers. Camosun is the defending champion.

"The good news for us is that we are leading after two tournaments and we haven't played our best golf yet,'' said Camosun coach John Randle. "We want to be at our best for the next two tournaments and then the nationals.''

The next tournament is Sept. 29-30, hosted by VIU at the Nanaimo Golf and Country Club. The last one is scheduled for Oct. 6-7 at the Chilliwack Golf and Country Club. The nationals are Oct. 15-19 in Oshawa.

"The strength of our team is in our depth,'' Randle said. "We have had great contributions from all six guys and we haven't had to use a score higher than a 76.''

Each team consists of five players and only the top four scores are counted.

"We have lots of work to do to eliminate some errors but we have a couple of weeks of practice to prepare for the third event.''

Camosun tied for third at last year's nationals and fourth the year before.

"We have bigger goals for the team this year,'' said Randle.
