The Victoria Grizzlies might have put a dagger into the Cowichan Valley Capitals’ playoff hopes on Wednesday night.
After a slow start, the red-hot Cam Thompson woke up the Grizzlies’ attack and the sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ Hockey League’s Island Division leaders cruised to a 6-3 victory at the Island Savings Centre.
The Capitals (9-34-5-2) are a desperate team, sitting seven points back of Coquitlam for the BCHL’s final playoff spot, and came out flying, scoring the game’s first two goals to go up 2-0 after 20 minutes.
But Thompson’s first of two goals on the night, three minutes into the second period, sparked the Grizzlies’ offence. Thompson now has 17 goals on the season and has scored nine in his last 10 games.
Ethan Nother, T.J. Friedmann, Jamie Rome and Tanner Hopps notched the other Grizzlies goals. Hugh Larkin, Troy MacTavish and Andrew McCann had the goals for the Caps.
The win keeps the Grizzlies in top spot in the Island Division with a 27-17-4-3 record.
LOOSE PUCKS: The Grizzlies were again without injured forwards Lucas Clark (lower body) and Ryan Nolan (upper body).
