Three, two, one, blast off?
The No. 6-seeded Camosun Chargers men鈥檚 basketball team is pulling off a Cinderella story at the Pacwest championship, first defeating No. 3-ranked Langara Falcons on Thursday, before following it up with an impressive 84-64 win over the No. 2 Quest Kermodes on Friday.
Top-seeded and undefeated Vancouver Island University Mariners remain in the way in tonight鈥檚 championship final at Capilano University.
Evan Woodson recorded 26 points for Camosun, including six three-pointers to lead the Chargers to Friday鈥檚 upset.
To bring home gold they will have to rocket through the top three seeds.
鈥淲e just came in and competed. Coming in as a sixth seed, no one has any expectations of you,鈥 Woodson told Pacwest TV after the stunner. 鈥淲e were just going to come in and play our game. We knew that we could win it.
鈥淲e just played hard and played together. That was the thing for this whole tournament, just being a team and everyone on the floor was amazing.鈥
Win or lose tonight, the Chargers now qualify for nationals, which begin March 17 in Fort McMurray, Alta.
On Friday, Camosun was down 9-0 early but battled back to take quarter leads of 17-13, 31-26 and 52-51. A powerful fourth quarter propelled the Chargers to the victory, helped by an early 13-4 run.
The Chargers were 0-3 against Squamish-based Quest this season before recording the upset.
Knocking off the No. 1 Mariners will be an even taller order.
