The Camosun Chargers men’s volleyball team is back-to-back Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association champion after beating the host and three-time Ontario-champions Humber Hawks 25-19, 25-22, 25-20 in the national championship game Saturday night in Toronto to defend their title from last year.

Lucas Maffia out of Oak Bay High, whose brother is a star guard with the University of Victoria Vikes in basketball, was named player of the game.

“This game and win is extra special for me and our veteran group as this is our last game [together as Chargers],” said Maffia, who is expected to move to U Sports next season.

“The number one thing for us this season and coming into this game was our strong attack and service lines,” added Maffia, in a statement.

Brazilian-import Eduardo Bida of Camosun was named national tournament MVP and Chargers-teammate Brendan Folkerts to the first all-star team. Maffia, and Dale MacDonnell out of Belmont Secondary, were named national tournament second team all-stars.

This is the third national title in Camosun history in men’s volleyball as the Chargers became the first team to win successive national championships since Red Deer Kings in 2016 and 2017.

It was the final game for graduating Chargers seniors MacDonnell, Folkerts, and Bida.

The Vancouver Island University Mariners lost 3-0 in sets to the Briercrest Clippers of Saskatchewan in the bronze-medal game.

Meanwhile, the Camosun College Chargers were swept in straight sets 25-22, 24-14, 25-19 Saturday night by the Lakeland Rustlers of Alberta in the CCAA women’s national championship game in Nanaimo. Erica Bolink and Corriena McNeice from the Chargers were named first-team all-stars and Camosun teammate Hannah May to the second-team.

The host VIU Mariners, who came into the tournament as four-time national champions, lost 3-1 to the Humber Hawks of Ontario in the bronze-medal game.
