Camosun College volleyball teams advance to national championship finals

The Chargers women鈥檚 team defeated the Augustana Vikings of Alberta 3-1 in sets in the CCAA national tournament semifinals played at Vancouver Island University on Thursday.

The Camosun College men’s and women’s volleyball teams have both advanced to their Canadian Colleges Athletic Association national championship games.

The defending national champion Chargers men’s team defeated the Ontario champion and No. 2-seed Fanshawe College Falcons 3-1 in sets in the semifinals at Humber College in Toronto on Thursday.

“Any time to be in the final is something to be excited for,” said Kristopher La Guardia of Camosun, named player of the game.

“All the work, all the practices, all the blood, sweat and tears are put into this competition, so getting into the final again after winning it last year is a testament to how many hours we put into the gym, on and off the court,” La Guardia said in a statement.

The PacWest champion Chargers beat the Manitoba champion Providence University and College Theological Seminary Pilots 3-1 in the quarter-finals and will meet the winner of a semifinal between Quebec-champion Voluntaires de Sherbrooke and the host Humber Hawks in the national championship game on Saturday at 4 p.m. PT.

The Chargers women’s team defeated the Augustana Vikings of Alberta 3-1 in sets in the CCAA national tournament semifinals played at Vancouver Island University on Thursday with Belmont-grad Hannah May of the Chargers named player of the game.

Camosun, which defeated the Atlantic champion Holland College Hurricanes of Prince Edward Island 3-0 in the quarter-finals, will play the winner of a late-finishing semifinal between the Lakeland College Hustlers of Alberta and Ontario-champion Humber Hawks in the championship game on Saturday at 6 p.m.

The VIU Mariners men’s and women’s squads both lost in the national quarter-finals Wednesday. For the VIU women’s team, it was the end of their four-consecutive-year reign as national champions.
