The Camosun Chargers golf team capped a spectacular season on Friday, adding the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association team championship to their Pacwest title, claimed two weeks earlier.
Both crowns came at Chilliwack Golf Club.
The Chargers were ranked No. 1 in the men鈥檚 competition, but had to bounce back in the third and final round Friday, defeating the Niagara Knights by eight strokes overall.
Brady Stead, Jeff Riches, Mac Keats, Grant Maskiewich and Matt Matheson totalled 860 strokes as a team over three rounds. Niagara took silver with a cumulative score of 868, while tournament host the UFV Cascades rallied with a solid final round to steal the bronze medal from the Georgian Grizzlies, by a single stroke.
鈥淚t was a great season,鈥� said Chargers coach John Randle. 鈥淭he guys played well from start to finish. The depth of our team paid off as we had five guys contributing every day. Our high score the last two days was 73, showing how strong our whole team was.
鈥淚鈥檓 very proud of the guys,鈥� Randle added. 鈥淭hey worked hard and deserved the rewards.鈥�
Camosun was 1-under 287 for the final day, while Niagara ballooned to a 10-over 298, which opened the door.
Stead, who had claimed the Pacwest individual title, led the Chargers, placing fourth with a 6-under 210 total, four shots back of individual champion Etienne Papineau of the Champlain St. Lawrence Lions.
Papineau, a member of the Canadian development team, recorded a 4-under 68 on Friday, following up his rounds of 73 and 65 for a two-stroke win over Stephen Brown of the Lambton College Lions. Matt Lemay, of Georgian College, was another shot back and one up on Stead (70-68-72). Matheson was tied for sixth overall with steady rounds of 71-72-72.
Camosun had finished second, third and second the past three years, respectively, and last won the team title in 2000.
