Camosun men, women secure tourney spots

Needing a win to clinch a spot in the upcoming Pacific Western Athletic Association provincial tournament, the Camosun Chargers men鈥檚 basketball team went out and got it done Saturday afternoon.

Led by Drake Downer鈥檚 19 points and eight rebounds, coach Scot Cuachon鈥檚 Chargers ended their regular season with a 92-65 victory over the CBC Bearcats at the PISE gym.

鈥淚t鈥檚 nice to not have to rely on anybody else,鈥 said Cuachon, whose team improved to 8-13 on the season and secured its place in the tournament which Camosun will host, Feb. 28 to March 2 at PISE.

鈥淣ow we can get some of our guys some rest,鈥 added a relieved Cuachon. 鈥淣ow we鈥檒l be on our home court and we have to show well.鈥

The women Chargers, on the other hand, had to await their fate.

Nothing has come easy this season for coach Brett Westcott鈥檚 club, but they certainly made it look that way earlier Saturday afternoon with their 99-47 thumping of the Bearcats.

The tough part came later as the 8-13 Chargers required a win by Quest University over Langara College to secure their spot in the provincial championship tournament. They got it thanks to a 66-56 victory by Quest.

Camosun held up its end as Elyse Matthews had 20 points for the Chargers and Ella Goldschmid and Miranda Cuthbertson added 19 and 14 respectively, albeit against a team that has not won all year.

鈥淚t was nice to finish with that win,鈥 said Goldschmid. 鈥淚t would be nice to get in because we are hosting and we鈥檝e had lots of chances to seal the deal, we just weren鈥檛 able to.

鈥淚t鈥檚 tough to rely on another team,鈥 Goldschmid added before the Quest result was in. 鈥淭his could have been our last game so we wanted to go out, work hard and have fun because we didn鈥檛 have much to lose at this point. We鈥檙e just rooting for Quest tonight.鈥

Camosun and Langara finished with identical records (8-13) but the Chargers won two of three during the regular season, so they had that tie-breaking advantage.
