The Camosun Chargers men鈥檚 volleyball team is No. 1, with a bullet.
Coach Charles Parkinson鈥檚 defending national collegiate championship crew is a perfect 10-0 in matches played and in those 38 sets, have won 30 heading into final Pacwest weekend play before the holiday break.
Go back even further and you鈥檒l find the men鈥檚 team has not lost in 22 straight matches heading back to last January. That includes two tense five-set marathons at nationals, where they claimed their first CCAA crown. They remain the No. 1 team in the country.
鈥淲e constantly remind our athletes that while it is difficult to reach No. 1 in the rankings, it鈥檚 even harder to stay there because everyone is really motivated to engineer an upset,鈥 said Parkinson, who was recently honoured as an inductee in the builder category into the Volleyball sa国际传媒 Hall of Fame.
His Chargers will play host to the 4-4 College of the Rockies today at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. at PISE gym, following the women鈥檚 games at 6 p.m. and 11 a.m., respectively.
鈥淲hile we are starting to feel the pressure of a great season and the fatigue of so many weeks of hard work, we know we can鈥檛 take the College of the Rockies lightly. They split with both Capilano and the University of the Fraser Valley so they proved they can play at a high level.鈥
Individually, Elion Wong leads the team in digs and is second in the Pacwest, averaging 3.84 in his 32 sets played. Teammates Tyler Remenda, Rian Plante and Vitor Macedo are fourth, fifth and seventh, respectively.
Camosun鈥檚 Douglas Bateman is fifth in the league in blocks.
