Canadian Tour honours Rutledge

Veteran pro golfer Jim Rutledge of Victoria added another accolade to his already impressive resum脙漏 this week.

Rutledge was named one of four players to be named Life Members by the Canadian Tour.

Rutledge, who is currently having a solid season on the Champions Tour, was joined by longtime PGA pro Mike Weir, Montreal native Danny Talbot and American Steve Stricker.

Rutledge, who has six Canadian Tour victories to his credit, sits sixth on the tour's all-time money list.

"The Canadian Tour holds a special place in my heart and I am honoured to have been named a Life Member," Rutledge said in a statement.

He's just eight years old, but Jeevan Sihota of Victoria now has two world golf titles to his name.

Sihota, who will go into Grade 3 at Lochside Elementary next month, is coming off winning the U.S. Kids Golf World Championships Under-8 division title earlier this month in North Carolina.

Sihota edged Xi Pu of China by one stroke while playing two rounds at the 2,088-yard back nine at Mid Pines Golf Club in Pinehurst.

Sihota, coached by Bear Mountain-based John Randle, also won the Callaway Junior World Golf Championship at age six.

Comox Valley has produced another Canadian beach volleyball champion.

Following in the footsteps of former national champ and current Olympian Martin Reader, Maverick Hatch has soared to the top of the national beach volleyball scene.

Hatch and partner Sam Schachter of Toronto won the men's title at last weekend's Canadian finals at Spanish Banks in Vancouver. Hatch and Schachter beat Chaim Schalk of Red Deer and Matt Zbyszewski of Toronto 19-21, 21-16, 18-16 in the gold-medal match.

On the women's side, Victoria's Jamie Broder teamed up with Kristina Valjas of Toronto to win the bronze medal.

Victoria cycling fans could very well get a glimpse at the next Gillian Carleton this weekend as the Greater Victoria Velodrome Association hosts the provincial track championships Friday through Sunday at the velodrome behind Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre.

Carleton was an Olympic medallist earlier this month in London and cyclists from around sa国际传媒 from beginner to elite will be looking to build off her success this weekend.

Action begins each day at 10: 30 a.m.

Victoria's Damian Cownden is heating up on the Canadian Motorcycle Drag Racing Association circuit.

Cownden holds down top spot in the Top Fuel overall points race thanks to a second-place finish at last weekend's Summer Nationals in Mission. After beating Nanaimo's Lyle Newton in the semifinal round on Day 2, Cownden was beaten in the final by rival Tommy Grimes.

Next up for Cownden and his crew is a trip to Woodburn, Oregon, this weekend for the All Harley Drag Racing Association championships.
