The 50th annual Cedar Hill Open goes Saturday and Sunday at 鈥淭he Rock.鈥 Former winners Lance McCullough and Gordie Scutt will be among players at the 36-hole event. McCullough, a pro at Cordova Bay, won in 2011, while Scutt, a teaching pro at Olympic View, triumphed in 2010.
And to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of the tournament, the champion of the inaugural Open, Dick Munn, will be on hand for Sunday鈥檚 awards ceremony. Munn is a former pro of the Cedar Hill course and in 2010 became only the fifth person to receive the prestigious sa国际传媒 PGA Lifetime Achievement Award.
Spectators are welcome. The first tee times for the tournament are between 7 and 9 a.m. on Saturday. The pros will tee off for their final rounds around 2 p.m. on Sunday.
Two Highlanders off to SFU
Two players in the Victoria Highlanders system will be taking their game to Simon Fraser University this fall.
Brandon Watson and Tarnvir Bhandal will join the Burnaby-based Clan, who play in the NCAA south of the border.
Watson, a goalkeeper, transfers to SFU from Coastal Carolina University, where he was forced to red shirt last season due to an injury.
Bhandal, a midfielder who will graduate from St. Andrew鈥檚 School, is a Lakehill product and former player with the Lower Island Selects.
The Clan will open training camp in August.
Mountain bike pros open season
A pair of Victoria mountain bikers begin their pro season this weekend in Germany.
Max Plaxton and Geoff Kabush will be part of the young Canadian team competing at the first UCI Mountain Bike World Cup Tour stop in Albstad.
Racing begins Friday but Plaxton and Kabush will compete in the Elite division on Sunday.
Gymnasts set for Garden City meet
Young artistic gymnasts from the Island and Vancouver are set to converge on the Peninsula Recreation Centre this weekend as the Falcon Gymnastics Club hosts the 31st annual Garden City Invitational meet.
Gymnasts, including those from local clubs Falcon and Lion鈥檚 Pride, will compete on the uneven bars, vault, balance beam and floor.
The first session of the meet starts Friday at 5 p.m., and action will continue all day Saturday and Sunday.

Croquet stars set to shine
Fancy some top-level croquet?
Then Cridge Park in downtown Victoria (behind Crystal Gardens) is the place to be this weekend as the Canadian Pacific Lawn Bowling Club hosts the 4th annual Victoria Day Open Croquet Tournament.
Players from the Island and Lower Mainland will take part in singles and doubles play. Saturday the doubles action goes from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., while Sunday鈥檚 singles play runs from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. On Monday the finals in singles will be held from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Island synchro clubs honoured
Two Island synchronized swimming clubs are being recognized by the sport鈥檚 governing body.
Synchro sa国际传媒 has named Victoria Synchro Club and Nanaimo Diamonds club as members of the 2013 Club Excellence Program.
The Victoria club is in the Silver Category and will receive $750 of funding, while the Nanaimo Diamonds are in the Bronze Category and will be awarded $350.
Soccer tourney raises funds
It is one of the most impressive local sports fundraising charity events. The third-annual Anneswer to Cancer fundraiser soccer tournament, to benefit Victoria Hospice and raise awareness about mesothelioma cancer, raised $61,000 last weekend at Finlayson turf field in Topaz Park.
Last year, the event raised more than $50,000. The tournament featured more than 400 players of all ages.
