Midnight arrived way to early for the Camosun Chargers women鈥檚 basketball team who were hoping to take on a Cinderella role at the PacWest provincial basketball championships on their home floor at PISE on Thursday.

Instead, the No. 6 Chargers dropped a tight 61-56 decision to the Douglas College Royals, ending the Saanich school鈥檚 season.

鈥淎bsolutely, it鈥檚 disappointing,鈥 said Chargers coach Brett Westcott.

鈥淵ou get close; you know you can beat the teams here, but performance is what dictates it and we didn鈥檛 perform near well enough.

鈥淲e鈥檙e competitive with everybody,鈥 he added.

鈥淭oo many mistakes at the defensive end, though. In terms of stuff in practice, we just didn鈥檛 execute defensively. We gave up too much easy stuff that we shouldn鈥檛 have and they capitalized on our mistakes.鈥

Ella Goldschmid and Marina Low had 13 points each for the Chargers. Amonda Francis, the PacWest鈥檚 player of the year, had 24 for Douglas.

The Chargers鈥 men鈥檚 team, also No. 6 in a six-team tournament, lost a tough result, 53-50 to No. 3 Quest in the late game.

Earlier, Kwantlen downed Quest 64-48 in women鈥檚 play while Douglas defeated Capilano 83-65 in men鈥檚.

Douglas now takes on Vancouver Island University in women鈥檚 semifinal play today at 1 p.m., while Capilano faces Kwantlen at 6 p.m.

In men鈥檚 action, Langara takes on Douglas at 8 p.m. and VIU will take on Quest at 3 p.m. at PISE.
