Dean Claggett from Two Eagles Golf Course and Academy in West Kelowna seriously thought about withdrawing from the PGA of sa国际传媒 Club Professional Championship.
聯I was trying too hard and I didn聮t have enough patience with my golf,聮聮 Claggett said Tuesday afternoon at the Victoria Golf Club after he won his second PGA of sa国际传媒 title. 聯I wasn聮t enjoying myself and I did think about not coming. But, this is sort of a second home to me and it was an opportunity to see old friends and play a
great course.聮聮
The 49-year-old Claggett, who worked several years at Gorge Vale, found his game this week and enjoyed his two rounds at the Victoria club. He recorded a two-shot victory over Rob Anderson of the Kelowna Golf and Country Club.
Claggett started the final round tied for second place with Paul Dashkewytch from Glacier Greens Golf Course in Comox, one-shot behind Anderson.
On the par-3 14th hole, Claggett made a double-bogey to again fall one shot off Anderson聮s pace. Then Claggett went to work with a short birdie putt on No. 15 and then another birdie on No. 17 to take the lead.
On the final hole, a par four, Claggett put his second shot to within about 20 feet of the pin, while Anderson was forced to play out of a bunker with his third shot. Claggett almost made another birdie but he was left with a tap in for the win.
Claggett fired rounds of 70 and 71, while Anderson came in with a 69 and a 74. During the first round, par was 69 while one stroke was added for Tuesday聮s finale. Claggett won $2,600, while Anderson takes home a cheque for $2,000. The total purse was $14,500.
聯It is always nice to come back here and play the Victoria club,聮聮 said Claggett, who also played briefly on the Canadian Tour and in Florida. 聯This course is just fabulous. There were some great opportunities to score today but the greens are a great defence here.
聯During these two rounds, I stayed patient with myself. Mentally, I was much better on the course. I did make some mistakes but I was able to hang in there. All day, I seemed to be in between clubs but I just had to battle through that.聮聮
After going sub-par on Monday, Anderson struggled a bit on Tuesday.
聯I wasn聮t very sharp today,聮聮 said Anderson, who won this event in 2007. 聯I had some trouble with my tee shots and my irons. I always seemed to be in recovery mode instead of attacking the pins.
聯I聮m not disappointed at all. It was a great two days of golf and I had the opportunity to play in the last group.聮聮
Anderson聮s sister is former LPGA player Gail Graham, who lives in Orlando.
Finishing in third place was former Victoria Golf Club assistant pro Jon Kadin, who now makes his home at Gallagher聮s Canyon Golf and Country Club in Kelowna. Kadin had rounds of 73 and 71.
In fourth place was Jim Goddard from Cordova Bay with a 145 total (72 and 73), while Gord Melissa from Pheasant Glen Golf Resort in Qualicum Beach was fifth at 146 (71 and 75).
Next year聮s event will be held at the Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club in Vancouver.
