Cougars meet Wranglers in cup showdown

Thankfully, it didn鈥檛 come to that as the Victoria Cougars defeated the Mission City Outlaws 7-5 in the final round-robin game of the four-team tournament featuring the three sa国际传媒 Junior B leagues.

The Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League-champion Cougars advance to today鈥檚 2 p.m. final against the 100 Mile House Wranglers of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League. The Outlaws (Pacific Junior Hockey League) face the Campbell River Storm of the VIJHL for bronze at 10 a.m. in Esquimalt.

The Wranglers edged the Storm 4-3 in the earlier game Saturday to force the issue in the round-robin event.

An overtime result in that game would have propelled the Cougars straight into the championship final as a win is worth three points, an overtime or shootout win was valued at two and a loss in ether one of the latter two scenarios earned one point in the standings.

As it was, Victoria finished with a 3-0 log, the Wranglers were 2-1, Outlaws 1-2 and Campbell River was winless at 0-3. The Cougars defeated 100 Mile House 4-2 on Day 1 of the tournament on Thursday.

鈥淚f you get into a gold-medal game, it鈥檚 winner take all. You hope that everybody shows up at the right time and in the right frame of mind and, hopefully, you get your bounces and see what happens,鈥 said Cougars鈥 president and governor Gary Boyer. 鈥淲e鈥檝e been close,鈥 he added of two recent second-place finishes in the provincial tourney. 鈥淲hen you look at these teams, it鈥檚 a one-in-four odds. It鈥檚 really a crapshoot because any one of these four teams can be in the final and win a gold medal.鈥

Ryan Carson and Nathan Looysen had two goals each while Brett Lervold, Austin Wilk and Cody Hodges added singles for the Cougars, who almost blew a 5-2 lead n the late game. Brody Dyck, Kolby Steen, Baylee Wright, Bryce Pisiak and Tristan Dundas replied for the Outlaws.

The winner of this tournament heads to Regina for the Keystone Cup which starts Thursday to determine the Western Canadian champion.

Victoria lost starting netminder Anthony Ciurro in Friday鈥檚 warm-up when he broke his collarbone. Gregory Maggio defeated Campbell River 5-3 that night and won again on Saturday.
