Cowichan girls break high-school relay record at sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ championships

The Cowichan Thunderbirds scorched to a new record by winning the girls’ 4x100 metres in 48.27 seconds at the sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ high school track and field championships over the weekend in Langley, breaking the old standard of 48.

The Cowichan Thunderbirds scorched to a new record by winning the girls’ 4x100 metres in 48.27 seconds at the sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ high school track and field championships over the weekend in Langley, breaking the old standard of 48.49 established by the Johnston Heights Eagles of Surrey in 2007. Reynolds took the bronze medal in 50.88.

Chicago Bains, who was part of the Cowichan 4x100 team, also won gold in the 100-metre hurdles in 14.59 seconds with Calli-Ann Abbott of Nanaimo-Brooks second in 15.15. Bains also won silver in the 400 hurdles.

In other Island highlights, Taylor Lyman of Reynolds won the boys’ 800 metres in 1:53.46. Mak Rokic of Oak Bay (43.70 metres) and Sam Willett of Mount Douglas (41.07) were 1-2 in the boys’ discus. Willett also won gold in the hammer throw at 54.94 metres.

New Westminster won the senior team title with 65 points, edging second-place Reynolds (62). The other Island teams in the senior top-10 were Oak Bay in sixth, Cowichan seventh and Mount Douglas in eighth. Oak Bay won the junior title.
