Olympic gold medallist and 12-time Grand Slam doubles champion Daniel Nestor, and Canadian Davis Cup captain Frank Dancevic will play two sets of exhibition tennis doubles at the Cedar Hill Recreation Centre Sunday at 6 p.m.
Nestor and Dancevic will compete against nationally ranked seniors players Raj Mahal of Victoria and Max Brown from Vancouver in the first set. Immediately following, Oak Bay Secondary top-ranked player Chiho Mushika and University of Victoria No. 1 Alejandra Gutierrez will join Nestor and Dancevic for a set of mixed doubles.
Nestor, 46, began his career in 1989 and retired in 2018 with 91 professional men’s doubles tournament titles, including winning four times at the French Open, twice at Wimbledon, once each at the U.S. and Australian Opens, with his crowning achievement a gold medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.
Dancevic, 34, began his professional career on the APT Tour. He was named captain of sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½â€™s Davis Cup team in 2017.
Mushika, 17, is an international student from Japan and the former Japanese junior national doubles champion. She has won two sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ under-18 singles titles since coming to study in Victoria. Mushika will attend the University of San Francisco on an NCAA tennis scholarship.
Gutierrez moved to Victoria from Colombia. She plans to compete on the professional tour when she graduates from UVic this year. Gutierrez is also a tennis coach at St. Michaels University School and helped to guide the SMUS team to its first sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ high school championship.
