Diego Maffia propels Oak Bay to basketball provincials

The Oak Bay Bays are headed back to the sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ high school basketball championship tournament after defeating the Belmont Bulldogs 91-72 late Saturday night in the championship game of the 69th Vancouver Island boys’ Quad-A high school basketball championship at Oak Bay High School gymnasium.

The Bulldogs will try to join Oak Bay at the Langley Events Centre from March 6 to 9 when they host the Claremont Spartans in the Challenge Game tonight at Belmont. Claremont won the right to challenge Belmont after the Spartans won the bronze medal over Dover Bay on Saturday and had not faced Belmont in the tournament.

Diego Maffia of Oak Bay, who scored 53 points in the championship game, was named Island tournament MVP. Danny Song of Belmont was selected the best defensive player.

Named to the first all-star team were Jaime Palamos Molins and Ewan McKenzie of Oak Bay, Song and Markus Modrovic of Belmont and Nik Babaeff of the Claremont Spartans. Selected to the second team were Maffia, Matthew Geng of the Mount Douglas Rams, Owen Morrison of the Nanaimo District Islanders, Caleb Kotai of the Dover Bay Dolphins and Ethan Boag of Claremont.

Mount Douglas was named most sportsmanlike team.

Meanwhile, the G.P. Vanier Towhees of Courtenay defeated the Reynolds Roadrunners 62-48 in the boys’ high school Triple-A hoops championship game played in Nanaimo.

Mark Isfeld of Courtenay defeated John Barsby of Nanaimo 76-49 in the third-place game.

Jacob Tortrelli of G.P. Vanier was named both MVP and top defensive player.

G.P. Vanier, Reynolds and Mark Isfeld advanced to the sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ championship March 6-9 at the LEC.

Brentwood College edged the St. Michaels University School Blue Jags 72-70 in the Double-A Island high school championship game while the Lambrick Park Lions defeated the Parkland Panthers 94-69 in the third-place game.

Ian Grabher was tournament MVP while Brentwood College-teammate Shaw Blaisdell was named best defensive player.

Brentwood College, SMUS and Lambrick Park advanced to the sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ tournament March 6-9 at the LEC.

Host Glenlyon Norfolk School defeated Nanaimo 90-59 in the Island boys’ Single-A championship game. Gold River defeated St. Andrew’s 56-52 in the bronze-medal game.

Chris Graham was named tournament MVP while GNS teammate Noah Fekete was selected best defensive player.

GNS, Nanaimo and Gold River advance to the sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ championship March 6-9 at the LEC.
