鈥淚t鈥檚 the first time [this year] for winged sprint cars. It鈥檚 the fastest class we have out here,鈥 said Daryl Crocker, Western Speedway manager. 鈥淭hey鈥檙e going to get around the track in less than 14 seconds. They鈥檝e got 800-horsepower engines.
鈥淭hen there鈥檚 the CAMRA cars, which are vintage cars and some of the drivers raced here in 1975. The cars have been restored to original shape and they bring them back and race them, just like they did back in the 鈥70s,鈥 said Crocker.
CAMRA stands for Canadian American Modified Racing Association and one of the founders was Reg Midgley, whose son Darrell is now lease holder at Western Speedway.
Qualifying starts at 5:30 p.m. with a fan fest, where spectators can meet the drivers and see the cars, at about 6 p.m. The competition goes into trophy dashes, heat races and main events for each class, with the same format continuing Saturday.
Eighteen-year-old Robbie Price will be a young man to watch in the winged class, said Crocker.
鈥淗e鈥檚 a third-generation driver at Western Speedway,鈥 Crocker said of Price, who has already won an event in Washington this season and last weekend was second and fourth in two races in Idaho, driving the No. 14 Rendle Bros Car.
Jeff Montgomery is also a multi-winner at the Strawberry Cup.
The grandstands will open at 4:30 p.m. and organizers are hoping the rain stays away.
鈥淭he weather has hurt us a few times, for sure. Two weeks ago we had Monster trucks and it rained on Saturday. We still got the show in, but not at nearly the crowd we were hoping for. But last Saturday we had a great crowd and great show for our Team Demo night, so that made up for it a bit,鈥 said Crocker.
