Eagles soar past Grizzlies again

The Victoria Grizzlies just can’t solve the Surrey Eagles.

For the second time in a week, the Eagles kept the Grizzlies at bay, beating Victoria 5-3 on Friday night at South Surrey Arena.

The Eagles, who beat the Grizzlies last weekend at The Q Centre, used two early power-play goals in the third period to erase a 2-1 Grizzlies lead as Surrey improved to 12-9 on the season, while Victoria dropped to 12-11.

After Devon deVries gave the Grizzlies an early lead, beating Max Prazma in the Eagles net six minutes into the game, the teams traded second-period goals with Jake Bongo scoring for Surrey and Kalen Szeto for Victoria, giving the visitors the lead after 40 minutes.

Buddy Johnson got the Eagles’ offence going, beating Kyle Kelsey 4:44 into the final frame to tie it at 2-2. Then at the 10-minute mark, Michael Abgrall tallied for Surrey, with Bongo adding another three minutes later to put the Eagles in control. Andrew Amousse gave the Grizzlies some life, scoring his seventh of the season at 14:33. Jacob Slipec added an empty-netter with 30 seconds remaining.

The Grizzlies now head over to George Preston Arena to take on the conference-leading Langley Rivermen tonight.
