Colton Bottaro and Hunter Grant were named winners Wednesday of bursaries to attend the UCLA Bruins’ prestigious summer rugby camp in Los Angeles.
Bottaro, a Grade 10 student at Esquimalt High School, and Grant, in Grade 8 at L’école Victor-Brodeur, will receive airfare, accommodations, transfers, uniforms and meals while attending the camp at UCLA, which runs June 24 to 26 and is run by Bruins head rugby coach Scott Stewart.
Esquimalt Mayor Barb Desjardins presented the boys with the bursaries and said the intent is to encourage them to further their careers in rugby and become leaders in the Esquimalt rugby community for years to come.
Boudreau eyes national title
Fresh off making the cut at the PGA Tour sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½â€™s sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ Island Savings Open, Victoria’s Edd Boudreau now turns his attention to the PGA Championship of sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½.
Boudreau, an assistant pro at Gorge Vale, will be among the field of 64 professionals from around sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ who will battle in a match play format June 24-28 at Magna Golf Club in Aurora, Ont. Boudreau opens the tournament against Manitoba’s Scott Borsa.
The final match is scheduled for June 28.
Rugby players make Team sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½
Two mid-Island rugby players hope to lead sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ to the Under-20 National Women’s League title next weekend.
Angela Davies of Cowichan Rugby Club and Dana Beirnes of Nanaimo Hornets Rugby Club were named to the 25-player provincial team roster Tuesday and will suit up for sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ at the tournament, which will be held at UBC. sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ opens play June 27 against Ontario.
Climbing worlds needs helps
The world is coming to Boulders Climbing Gym and the Central Saanich facility needs your help in being gracious hosts.
The International Federation of Sport Climbing’s World Youth Climbing Championships are set for Aug. 15-19 at Boulders and the local club is in need of sponsors, marketplace vendors and event volunteers for the championships, which will bring more than 500 athletes ages 14 to 19 from 50 different countries to Central Saanich.

Villains eye roller derby win
It’s derby night this Saturday at Archie Browning Sports Centre in Esquimalt.
The Margarita Villains, of Victoria’s Eves of Destruction Roller Derby club, hit the midway point of their season Saturday when they host the Northwest Derby Company from Port Orchard, Wash.
The bout begins at 7 p.m. and tickets are available at Hive Hair Salon, Logan’s Pub and online at evesofdestruction.com. Tickets will also be available at the door starting at 6 p.m.
