Spring is right around the corner and that means it’s time for some Destruction.

The Eaves of Destruction Roller Derby League announced its schedule Tuesday and there promises to be some exciting flat-track action at Archie Browning Sports Centre throughout the spring and summer.

The action begins with the Margarita Villains — who, along with the Belles of the Brawl, are the two Victoria teams — taking on the Cog Blockers of Bellingham on April 20. That’s followed by a May 18 battle between the Belles of the Brawl and Trampires from Tacoma’s Dockyard Derby Dames. The other home games include the Villains taking on Northwest Derby Company of Port Orchard on June 22; the Belles facing the Jet City Rollergirls’ Hula Honeys on July 27 and then on Sept. 21 the home schedule is capped by the all-Victoria battle between the Villains and Belles of the Brawl.

The Eves of Destruction teams will also venture onto the road this season. The Villains will head to Port Orchard May 4 to battle the Northwest Derby Company, and Port Angeles July 20 to face Port Scandalous. The Belles of the Brawl will be in Port Angeles May 11.

Tickets for all home games will be available online closer to the league start date. For more information, go to evesofdestructionrollerderby.com.

Carrigan sharp at the Bear

Royal Colwood’s Kevin Carrigan continued his hot play Tuesday in cold weather on the Vancouver Island Professional Tour’s Winter Tour.

Fresh off tying for first at last week’s event on his home course, Carrigan fired a 3-under 67 at Bear Mountain on Tuesday to claim the title. Carrigan finished three shots in front of Darren Day Jr. and Isaac Weintraub. Ross Mantell and Cole Shaw tied for third with rounds of 71. Parker Lilly was alone in fourth with a 72.

Carrigan’s victory vaulted him into fourth place on the Winter Tour’s Order of Merit, but he’s well back of leader Gordy Scutt, who remains in top spot despite missing Tuesday’s event. Lilly holds down second spot, while Shelby Dreher is third.

Next up for the Winter Tour is a March 12 stop at Highland Pacific.

Sidney bowlers shine

Miracle Lanes in Sidney may be a small bowling alley, but it’s starting to produce some big-time bowlers.

Thomas Zeran will represent Miracle Lanes at this weekend’s 5-pin provincial championships in Kelowna thanks some impressive recent performances. At the 4 Steps to Stardom tournament in Duncan, Zeran won the senior boys title, helping him book his ticket to provincials where he’ll have a shot at earning a berth the national championships, which are slated for May 4-6 in Vancouver. Zeran was also part of the Vancouver Island regional boys team that finished fourth at the recent Junior Pacific Coast tournament at Willowbrook Lanes in Langley.

Miracle Lanes’ Bailey Nichol also brought home some hardware from the 4 Steps to Stardom event. Nichol won the bronze medal in the bantam boys division, which was played in Nanaimo.

And Brianne Hortbagyi was part of the Island regional girls team that finished seventh at the Junior Pacific Coast tournament.
