The Nanaimo Clippers continue to build in the front office as the sa国际传媒 Hockey League club announced the addition of former Victoria Shamrocks executive director Paul German as its new director of business operations and marketing.
German鈥檚 mandate will be to develop a long-term strategy for the club. He will focus on both the fan experience and delivering the best value to the team鈥檚 corporate and community partners, said Clippers owner Wes Mussio, who made the hire along with new general manager and head coach Darren Naylor.
鈥淧aul brings a wealth of sports marketing knowledge and has a proven track record to that industry,鈥 Mussio said in a statement on Wednesday. 鈥淗e also brings a local flavour to the Clippers, a very important requirement for me as I want to bring back Nanaimo to the Clippers.
鈥淧aul is well known in the market, but more importantly, shares our vision and values for the club: To deliver the best product possible to both Nanaimo fans and our corporate partners.鈥
German has worked in marketing, specializing in brand and business development, for more than 20 years. That includes 14 years in the sports-entertainment industry.
The Saanich Peninsula native began his sports-marketing career in 2004 with the Vancouver Canadians, then an Oakland A鈥檚 affiliate. He returned to his hometown in 2008 as director of sales and marketing for the Victoria Seals baseball club.
German was recruited in 2011 by the Victoria Shamrocks as executive director, where he took one of the Canadian Lacrosse Association鈥檚 most hallowed brands to the next level on the Island sports scene. His time there included playing host to two Mann Cup championship series, the latter won by the Shamrocks in 2015.
He then took on the vice-president of business development position for Sports Ticketing Technology Company, where he worked with several major-market Western Hockey League teams. German also consulted on two Canadian championships over the past year: the 2017 RBC Cup in Cobourg, Ont., and the 2017 Mann Cup championship in New Westminster.
鈥淔rom our first conversation, we were all on the same page,鈥 German said of his new appointment. 鈥淲e make a strong executive, so I am excited to get going on my move back to the Island and roll up my sleeves as a Clipper.鈥
He will officially take over on March 1, but began representing the club on a limited basis as of Jan. 1.
