Field-hockey women in winning form

The Vikes played a tight defensive game and also generated many scoring opportunities en route to a 3-0 sa国际传媒 West victory at the UVic Turf Field. The victory pushed UVic's record to 3-2 and secured a berth in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport championship, Nov. 1-4 in Toronto. Calgary is winless in five starts. The UBC Thunderbirds lead the way with a perfect 4-0 mark.

"I really liked our second half of hockey," said UVic coach Lynne Beecroft. "We maintained better possession of the ball and created more 2-on-1 chances. Once we got that first goal, everything opened up a bit and we were a bit more relaxed."

After putting the pressure on Calgary with three consecutive short corners, the Vikes opened the scoring in the 26th minute as Alanna Macdonald slid the ball past Dinos' goalkeeper Sydney Hamm. The goal came with Calgary captain Carolino Romeo sitting on the sidelines with a yellow card.

Late in the first half, Kyla Kirby moved the ball through the Calgary defence and UVic's Kayleen van der Ree deflected the pass to give the Vikes a 2-0 lead.

Rookie Amanda Kurianowicz completed the scoring for the Vikes in the second half.

"I'm pleased with the result," said Beecroft.

"We have 11 rookies on the team, but this is a special group and they play hard for each other. Our team is very versatile as several of our players were in different positions today."

Rookie Sheriden Goodman-son recorded the shutout but she was not tested very often.

"Sheriden didn't have much work but she was really into the game,"' said Beecroft. "She was communicating with the team the entire game."

The Vikes and Dinos are back in action this morning at the UVic Turf Field. Game time is 11 a.m.

In other action:

- The UVic women's soccer team had their seven-game sa国际传媒 West unbeaten snapped after a 2-1 loss to the Saskatchewan Huskies.

The Vikes started the season with a 1-1 tie against the Alberta Pandas before winning six consecutive games. With the 6-1-1 record, UVic is tied for second place with the UBC Thunderbirds. The Trinity Western Spartans are in first place with a perfect 8-0 mark.

Jackie Harrison opened the scoring for UVic in the first half but Saskatchewan bounced back in the second half with goals by Jenelle Zapski and Megan Schenher. Saskatchewan now has a record of 4-3.

The Vikes, ranked No. 5 by the CIS, conclude the weekend road trip today in Regina against the Cougars.

UVic is the host team for the CIS championship, Nov. 8-11 at Centennial Stadium.

- After battling to a 2-2 draw Friday in Chilliwack against the Fraser Valley Cascades, the UVic men's soccer team will attempt to stay perfect at home today.

The Vikes will complete the home-and-home series against the Cascades, 2: 15 p.m. at Centennial Stadium. UVic is 4-0 at home while the team has three losses and a tie on the road.

UVic has a 4-3-2 record in the Pacific Division while Fraser Valley is 1-2-4. The Cascades have earned ties in their last three games.
