The final two women’s teams that will be competing at the 2019 Scotties sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ women’s curling championship were decided over the weekend in Kamloops.
The Victoria-Kelowna-Prince George team of skip Brette Richards backed by Blaine de Jager, Steph Jackson Baier and Heather Tyre won the Open No. 2 playdown’s A event after a 7-6 win over 2019 sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ junior women’s champion Sarah Daniels and an 11-4 win over Karla Thompson.
Kamloops’ Thompson took the B event with a 7-6 win over Daniels, whose rink hails from Victoria.
Both Richards and Thompson have players who have won previous sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ women’s championships. Jackson Baier won in 2014 with Team Van Osch while Thompson skipped a team to a win in 2016. Richards and de Jager won with Marla Mallett in 2017.
Nanaimo’s Kesa Van Osch is the defending provincial women’s champion and earns an automatic berth to the sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ finals.
The final men’s berth will be determined at the playdowns Friday to Sunday in Lillooet.
The 2019 sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ men’s and women’s championships will be held Jan. 29 to Feb. 3 in Quesnel.
