Football’s championship weekend has some Island flavour

Silverware and rings will be on the line for several Island football players as the CIS celebrates its national championship at the Vanier Cup today in Quebec City and the CFL does the same with the Grey Cup on Sunday in Winnipeg.
Silverware and rings will be on the line for several Island football players as the CIS celebrates its national championship at the Vanier Cup today in Quebec City and the CFL does the same with the Grey Cup on Sunday in Winnipeg.

Former Mount Douglas Rams stars, brothers Marcus and Terrell Davis, and Westshore Rebels’ product Quinn van Gylswyk lead the UBC Thunderbirds into action versus the defending champion Montreal Carabins in the university championship today at 10 a.m. Pacific. Marcus and Terrell Davis are integral pieces for the T-Birds on offence and defence, respectively, and van Gylswyk was just named a CIS first-team All-Canadian as punter and is the No. 2 kicker in the country.

Van Gylswyk, in his final year of eligibility, is coming off back-to-back CIS special-teams player of the week nods.

The three are joined by fellow Vancouver Islanders Tristen Fourish and Edgar Nelson of Belmont, and Dylan Chapdelaine, Marshall Cook and Nick Cessford, who all have ties to the Nanaimo-Parksville area, either in high school or junior football.

Meanwhile, the Grey Cup also has a few ties to the Island, including a Ballenas Whalers matchup.

Andrew Marshall lines up as a backup defensive lineman and plays special teams with the Ottawa Redblacks. The six-foot-three, 240-pounder hails from Nanoose Bay and is a product of the Whalers’ football program.

The 25-year-old went on to Simon Fraser University before moving on to the CFL. He was first signed as a free agent in Calgary in April of 2013, but released after training camp. Marshall went on to join the sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ Lions in August of 2013, but was then selected by Ottawa in the third round of the CFL expansion draft that December.

Ottawa’s opponent in Sunday’s Grey Cup, the Edmonton Eskimos, includes another former Whaler in starting centre Justin Sorensen, the six-foot-eight, 311-pounder, who hails from Parksville.

Another pair of Victoria products are also part of the Green and Gold, but neither is expected to play Sunday. Offensive lineman Brian Ramsay, a Victoria resident, was on the injured list the last three games, last suiting up against sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ on Oct. 17.

Greg Morris is a running back/returner who joined the Eskimos on the practice roster and dressed in the last nine regular-season games for the West champions and Grey Cup favourites. The former star with the Westshore Rebels — the BCFC outstanding rookie in 2011 and outstanding offensive back and BCFC all-star and CJFL All-Canadian in 2012 — was placed back on the practice roster prior to the Western Final.

Both Ramsay and Morris would still earn Grey Cup rings should the Eskimos prevail.
