Four Victoria Grizzlies up for BCHL awards

Grizzlies forward Alex Newhook, projected for the first round of the 2019 NHL draft, already has a stranglehold on the non-voting Brett Hull Award for BCHL scoring champion. Newhook is also the Island Division nominee for the Vern Dye Memorial Award as league MVP. He is up against forward Kevin Wall of the Chilliwack from the Mainland Division and defenceman James Miller of the Penticton Vees from the Interior Division.

Carter Berger of the Grizzlies is the Island Division nominee for BCHL top defenceman against Interior blue-line rep Miller and Mainland Division nominee Layton Ahac of the Prince George Spruce Kings.

Grizzlies forward Alex Campbell is the Island Division鈥檚 nominee for BCHL rookie of the year. He is up against Wall from the Mainland Division and forward Kent Johnson of the Trail Smoke Eaters from the Interior Division.

Campbell, projected for the second or third rounds of the 2019 NHL draft, is also up for most BCHL sportsmanlike player against the Mainland鈥檚 Kalen Szeto of the Langley Rivermen and the Interior鈥檚 Mike Hardman of the West Kelowna Warriors.

Kurtis Chapman of the Grizzlies is the Island Division nominee for best goaltender. The Mainland鈥檚 nominee is Logan Neaton of the Spruce Kings and the Interior鈥檚 nominee is Jack LaFontaine of the Vees.

The choices were made in a vote conducted among BCHL head coaches.

The coaches will now be asked to vote for their choice from among the finalists and the winners will be announced prior to the start of the BCHL playoffs.

The Joe Tennant Memorial Trophy for BCHL coach of the year is being voted on this season by BCHL broadcasters and the finalists will be announced by the end of the week.
