SAN FRANCISCO - San Francisco Giants infielder-outfielder Brett Pill will have right knee surgery Thursday to repair a torn meniscus and is likely to miss 3 to 4 weeks.
Manager Bruce Bochy confirmed Wednesday night that Pill would need the procedure, after the skipper earlier made the announcement in Arizona that Pill had injured the knee several weeks ago but tried to play through it.
Athletic trainer Dave Groeschner said the expected timeframe for Pill's return is at least a few weeks — meaning it is likely he will be sidelined for opening day April 1 at the Los Angles Dodgers after he made a strong showing to earn a roster spot.
Pill, 28, played 48 games for the World Series champions last season, batting .210 with four homers and 11 RBIs. He hit .259 with two homers and seven RBIs in 10 games this spring training.
