A new doubles partner proved no problem for Jamie Broder of Victoria, who opened the post-Rio Olympics season with the women鈥檚 gold medal Sunday in the Trinidad and Tobago Beach Volleyball Tournament on Turtle Bay.
The new combination of Broder and Melissa Humana-Paredes of Toronto proved successful as the Canadians beat Kimberly DiCello and Summer Ross of the U.S. 17-21, 21-16, 15-12 in the final, which took one hour and six minutes. sa国际传媒 also swept to gold on the men鈥檚 side through Olympian Sam Schachter of Richmond Hill, Ont., and new partner Sam Pedlow of Barrie, Ont., who beat Cuban Olympians Nivaldo Diaz and Sergio Gonzalez in the final.
Broder, a Claremont Secondary volleyball product and former Vancouver Island University Mariners standout, made it to the Sweet 16 in the Rio Olympics last summer with partner Kristina Valjas of Toronto.
鈥淚t felt great to come away with the championship win this weekend in Tobago. Melissa [Humana-Paredes] and I decided to team up for this tournament only and shared a similar mindset, which I think showed in our play,鈥 said Broder, following the championship victory.
鈥淪ince we are both primarily defenders, we had to be a little creative on the court by utilizing the strengths of our serving and ball control to manage the game. I haven鈥檛 committed to a partner yet for 2017 and am considering a few different options.鈥
Like many of the Island Olympians who competed in Rio, the 31-year-old Broder is now getting her head around plans for the next quadrennial leading to Tokyo 2020.
鈥淚 am taking it one year at a time right now to see if I want to go for another quad or not,鈥 said Broder.
