Golf contest celebrates 95 years

The Zone 5 women鈥檚 amateur and senior championship, sponsored by Jim Pattison Lexus Toyota Victoria, is celebrating its 95th anniversary. The tournament tees off at 9:06 a.m.

The Zone 5 women鈥檚 amateur and senior championship, sponsored by Jim Pattison Lexus Toyota Victoria, is celebrating its 95th anniversary.

The tournament tees off at 9:06 a.m. on Monday with the first group that includes 2014 defending amateur champion Bree Sharratt of Bear Mountain and former champions Alison Murdoch of Victoria Golf Course and Alison Quinlan of Uplands Golf Club.

Another former champion, Penny Baziuk of Ardmore, is in the second group at 9:15 a.m.

Round 2 moves to Bear Mountain鈥檚 Valley Course on Tuesday with tee times beginning at 10:35 a.m.

Forty players are in the mix at the event which is open to all Zone 5 female golfers with a verifiable handicap factor of 18.1 or lower. Seniors must have reached their 50th birthday by the first day of the championship.

The winner and runner-up in each tournament will form the team representing Zone 5 at the sa国际传媒 Seniors (June 24-26 at Cowichan G.C.) and the sa国际传媒 Amateur (June 30-July 3 at Duncan Meadows).

Murdoch, a hall of famer, is the defending senior champion as that category runs in conjunction with the amateur.

A handicap category winner will also be determined. Lou Watkins of Cordova Bay claimed that 2014 title and is also in the field this week.

In honour of the 95th anniversary, organizers are hoping to have numerous past champions present to join in the festivities.
