Goaltender Kurtis Chapman extended his personal undefeated streak, and that of the Victoria Grizzlies as a whole, to seven games on Wednesday night, helping down the Cowichan Valley Capitals 4-2 at the Island Savings Centre in Duncan.
Chapman made 36 saves to earn the win as fellow netminder Zack Rose has taken ill and did not dress for the game. Luke Sheldrake, an affiliated player from the Westshore Wolves, suited up as the backup.
Chapman is 6-1-1 with a shutout since joining the team from the Calgary Mustangs of the AJHL. He lost his first game and has been undefeated since.
The Grizzlies also defeated the Capitals 5-3 at The Q Centre in Colwood on Tuesday.
T.J. Friedmann, who recently accepted a scholarship with the Quinnipiac Bobcats for the 2019-20 season, scored a pair of goals, including a shorthanded one. Shawn O鈥橫alley and Ryan Nolan (empty-netter) added singles for the now 20-14-3-2 Grizzlies.
Tate Coughlin and Troy MacTavish replied for the Capitals, who cut it to 3-2 before Nolan iced it with his second goal in two games.
J.J. Pichette started in goal for Cowichan, but gave way to recently acquired Mike Corson. Corson came over in a trade from the Blind River Beavers of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League in exchange for future considerations on Tuesday. Pichette allowed three goals on 14 shots, while Corson stopped all 22 he faced.
The Grizzlies, meanwhile, confirmed the signing of 18-year-old defenceman Jarin Sutton, of Prince George, who was playing Junior B with the Kelowna Chiefs. Sutton will fill the vacant spot left by Jacson Alexander鈥檚 departure to the Western Hockey League鈥檚 Swift Current Broncos.
Sutton did not play on Wednesday. He is expected to join the team today as they prepare to play host to West Kelowna on Friday.
