Ethan Nother’s goal 55 seconds into the second overtime and stellar netminding from Zack Rose led the Victoria Grizzlies to a 2-1 victory over the Powell River Kings on Saturday night at Hap Parker Arena.

The win follows an 8-2 road drubbing on Friday night in which Rose was pulled after allowing four goals.

On Saturday, he made 36 saves, including breakaway stops off Ben Berard in the third period to keep it tied and Kevin Obssuth in the first overtime session.

“Rose was good. He responded well and that was important, getting right back on the horse,” said Grizzlies general manager and head coach Craig Didmon.

“Our defensive core, as a whole, played very well. I thought they acquitted themselves well and they were physical.”

Two talented 16-year-olds were in on the Grizzlies’ first goal as local defenceman Jacson Alexander opened the scoring at 11:30 of the first period on an assist to Alex Newhook as the two youngsters officially collected their first points of the season.

Newhook will likely be awarded two more assists from the weekend as the Grizzlies will send in video that shows he was short-changed twice by officials. Marty Westhaver, who is playing on a forward line with Newhook and Nother, collected his second assist of the season in the win.

Ben Raffler had the lone goal for Powell River, which out-shot Victoria 14-6 in the first period and 11-8 in the scoreless second frame.

Rose looked much more composed between the goalposts for the Grizzlies in Game 2. Mitch Adamyk also made his second straight start for the Kings and stopped 26 shots.

Victoria stops in Port Alberni to play the Alberni Valley Bulldogs on Friday. The Grizzlies visit the Nanaimo Clippers on Saturday.
