The Victoria Grizzlies wasted a chance Saturday night to put some breathing room between them and the Powell River Kings and Nanaimo Clippers in the tight race for the sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ Hockey League’s Island Division crown.

The Grizzlies gave up five third-period goals en route to a 6-3 loss to the Warriors at Royal LePage Place in West Kelowna.

The loss snaps a five-game winning streak for Victoria (30-18-4-3) as they remain one point up on the Kings and Clippers, who were both idle on Saturday.

The Grizzlies, coming off a win Friday night in Salmon Arm, jumped out to a 2-0 lead behind goals by Ethan Nother and Shawn O’Malley midway through the first period, but a late power-play goal by Parm Dhaliwal gave the Warriors life as West Kelowna improved to 27-26-1-1 on the season.

After Marty Westhaver scored his fourth goal in the last two games in the second period, the Warriors came to life in the third. Chase Dubois, R.J. Murphy, Willie Reim, Chase Stevenson and former Alberni Bulldog Ryan Steel into the empty net rounded out the Warriors’ scoring. Zack Rose returned to the Grizzlies net after missing two games to injury and he was busy. Rose faced 49 shots, while Warriors netminder Nik Amundrud made 29 saves.

The Grizzlies are back at it today when they head to Merritt to take on the Centennials at 2 p.m.
