HarbourCats add to roster as WCL season nears

The Victoria HarbourCats signed several players to 10-day contracts Tuesday, including hometown pitcher Ethan Skuija from the UBC Thunderbirds.

Skuija is completing his freshman year at UBC. He played for the Victoria Eagles in the sa国际传媒 Premier League and was one of the league鈥檚 top arms in 2015, going 8-2 with a 1.53 ERA and 62 strikeouts in 63.2 innings pitched for the Eagles. In 10 appearances this spring for UBC, Skuija has allowed 13 hits with 14 strikeouts in 141脷3 innings with a 5.02 ERA.

Others signed to 10-day contracts were third-baseman Justin Bundy, first-baseman Will Dawson and infielder Cole Sullivan, all of Northeast Texas Community College, outfielder Jordan Ackerman of Bluefield College in Oregon and outfielder Jamie Cooper of Occidental University in Los Angeles.

Ten-day contract players help fill the gaps in the first two to three West Coast League series while other regular-signed players play out their NCAA post-seasons. The 10-day players will have an opportunity to earn their way into full-season contracts depending on their performances. The 10-day contracts will last until June 10, when WCL teams must make decisions on each player.

Meanwhile, the HarbourCats signed infielder and redshirt freshman Justin Brown out of the University of Portland to a regular contract.

The HarbourCats also announced that previously signed infielder Tom Rykker of the University of San Diego and pitchers Chris Vargas of University of California-Irvine and Mason Hilty of Dixie State are unable to report to Victoria this season.

Meanwhile, Kelly Norris-Jones of Victoria, whose NCAA career as a catcher was with the University of Illinois Fighting Illini, has been named as an assistant HarbourCats coach. He is the son of HarbourCats GM Brad Norris-Jones.

The HarbourCats open the 2016 WCL season on June 3 in Walla Walla, Washington, against the Sweets. Victoria opens the home portion of the campaign June 7 against the Wenatchee AppleSox at Royal Athletic Park.
