A hit-fest in Wenatchee, Washington, on Friday night ended in the Victoria HarbourCats’ favour. The HarbourCats and host AppleSox combined for 27 hits and it was the visitors coming away with 10-5 win that allowed Victoria to continue to hunt down the West Coast League’s lone wild-card playoff berth.
The victory allowed the HarbourCats (23-22) to move to within two games of wild-card leader Corvallis, which was idle Friday night. Both teams have nine games remaining in the regular season.
The HarbourCats did most of their damage against AppleSox starter Micael Taylor (2-5). A four-run second inning was sparked by Griffin Andreychuk’s RBI double and a three-run fourth inning was led by a two-run triple by HarbourCats outfielder A.J. Alcantara. Taylor finished with four innings pitched, allowing 11 hits and six earned runs.
Shortstop Scott Jarvis led the HarbourCats’ hit parade with three hits, while Andreychuk, Alcantara, Austin Guibor, P.J. Floyd, Chase Lambert and Ben Polshuk all had two hits apiece.
Cal State-Fullerton right-hander Henry Omana started on the hill for the HarbourCats, but had his troubles as well. Omana went 21Ú3 innings while giving up four runs before giving way to impressive efforts by Tei Vanderford and Sean O’Toole.
Leadoff hitter Joey Jansen led the AppleSox (21-25) attack with four hits, while Nick Nyquist was 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
The teams do it all again tonight in Wenatchee at 7 p.m. They finish the three-game set Sunday at 6 p.m. Victoria then returns home for a crucial three-game series with Yakima Valley (24-22) beginning Monday at 6:35 p.m. at Royal Athletic Park.
EXTRA BASES: The HarbourCats’ game against Walla Walla that was rained out July 26 will be made up on Aug. 10 at Royal Athletic Park, if the game means something in the standings. . . . Monday’s game at R.A.P. will feature a fireworks display after the game to honour sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ Day.
