HarbourCats’ Owen named WCL pitcher of the year

Left-hander Jack Owen of the Victoria HarbourCats was named 2017 West Coast League pitcher of the year, in league awards announced Monday. Owen was named to the first all-star team and four HarbourCats to the second team.

Owen was named to the first all-star team and four HarbourCats to the second team.

Owen led the WCL in starters’ ERA (1.01) in seven starts and was tied for seventh in strikeouts (48) in 44.1 innings pitched, while allowing just 29 hits. The incoming freshman to Auburn of the NCAA SEC finished two back of the league lead in wins, working to a 4-1 record.

Catcher Shane McGuire, incoming freshman to the University of San Diego, led the HarbourCats with his .451 batting average and earned a WCL second all-star team nod. Outfielder Hunter Vansau from Mississippi State hit .359 with a team-leading eight home runs for Victoria to also be named to the second team, along with pitcher Adam McKillican from the Comox Valley, who was 5-3, and Cats closer Travis Kuhn, who finished second in the WCL with nine saves.

HarbourCats named All-WCL honourable mentions were infielders Harrison Bragg and Harry Shipley, outfielder Andrew Shaps and starting-pitcher AJ Block.

West Virginia sophomore catcher Chase of the Bellingham Bells was named MVP of the WCL. Illig put on a power display by setting a WCL single-season record for home runs with 15 and also winning the WCL All-Star Game Home Run Derby. For the summer, Illig hit .360 with 52 RBIs.
