The HarbourCats of the West Coast League of baseball announced the signing of a trio of players from big-name NCAA programs Wednesday — Usselman from the Ducks, six-foot-seven pitcher David Shaw from the Texas Longhorns and infielder Max Clark from the Washington Huskies.

“You always love finding and signing top pitching like Shaw and Usselman, and Clark is an exciting prospect,” HarbourCats head coach Todd Haney said in a statement.

Catcher Lee Grey from the Victoria Golden Tide development team was also signed.

“Grey is also showing promise and developing under the Golden Tide coaches, important depth for what is a real grind at times in the West Coast League,” said Haney.

The WCL is a summer collegiate league for players from NCAA, NAIA and Canadian schools.

The HarbourCats open at home June 2 against the Kamloops NorthPaws.

The Nanaimo NightOwls, meanwhile, announced the return of a key player from last season. Handy six-foot-two hitter Cody Hendriks out of NCAA Cal State-Bakersfield led the Owls in 2022 with 13 doubles and 14 extra-base hits with eight stolen bases. He was second on the team with 39 hits.

“Cody does so much that any coach values and we’re glad to have him back,” said NightOwls GM Jim Swanson.

“He’s a key piece for Cal State-Bakersfield and definitely has pro potential.”

The NightOwls open at home June 2 against the Walla Walla Sweets at Serauxmen Stadium.
