High-school hoops tournament tips off

The University of Victoria Vikes are on their Christmas breaks, but competitive basketball will still hit the floor at the CARSA Performance Gym this post-holiday season.

The University of Victoria Vikes are on their Christmas breaks, but competitive basketball will still hit the floor at the CARSA Performance Gym this post-holiday season.

With the support of the UVic athletics department and the Vikes basketball alumni, the facility will welcome top-notch high school senior boys鈥 competition beginning today and carrying through to Friday afternoon鈥檚 gold-medal game.

Among the eight teams competing will be three Washington state schools, as well as sa国际传媒鈥檚 No. 1-ranked quadruple-A Walnut Grove Gators; No. 1-rated double-A St. Michaels University School Blue Jags; the Oak Bay Bays; Lambrick Park Lions and the well respected Harry Ainlay Titans of Edmonton.

The tournament tips off today at 3 p.m. with the undefeated Gators tackling the Kingston Buccaneers, from Kitsap, Washington. Lambrick Park hits the floor at 4:45 p.m. against the Seattle-based Ballard Beavers.

Washington鈥檚 Vashon Island Pirates 鈥 who count former Vikes guard Zac Andrus among their graduates 鈥 face Oak Bay, which includes future Vikes player Jaden Touchie, at 6:30 p.m.

The first day of play concludes with the defending sa国际传媒 double-A champion Blue Jags facing the Titans at 8:15 p.m. Play continues Thursday at the same start times, with the final set for Friday at 2:15 p.m.

Daily admission for is $5 for adults and $2 for students for the UVic alumni tournament, which is sponsored by Passion Sports.

鈥淚 am really pleased to be involved with this high-level basketball event, which I hope is the first of many others to be held here at the university,鈥 said Greg Wallis, owner of Passion Sports, who played high school basketball at Reynolds prior to Pac West and sa国际传媒 West all-conference recognition at Camosun College and then Simon Fraser University. 鈥淓ight high-quality teams and some outstanding players should provide three days of real entertainment.鈥

Vikes Alumni basketball chairman Phil Ohl thanked Wallis and encouraged fans to attend games.

鈥淎ny profit we can make through gate receipts will go towards establishing a scholarship for a current high school player to attend and play for UVic,鈥 Ohl said.
