Highlanders primed for NCAA tests

The Victoria Highlanders will get to measure themselves against the NCAA鈥檚 Pac-12, a conference which produced two first-round picks in the 2013 MLS draft, when they play the University of Washington Huskies this afternoon in an exhibition men鈥檚 soccer tournament in Port Angeles.

It will be the first action of the pre-season for the Highlanders, who open the United Soccer League Premier Development League regular season May 4 against the Kitsap Pumas at Royal Athletic Park.

The Huskies, who had two players invited to the MLS combine with Dylan Tucker-Ganges drafted 34th overall by the Portland Timbers, were 13-5-3 this season and beat Air Force in the first round of the NCAA tournament before losing to Creighton.

But the Highlanders are used to this level of opposition. Several of the Highlanders rivals in the PDL Northwest Division on the Portland Timbers U-23 and Seattle Sounders U-23 teams also play soccer in the NCAA, with three of those players going in the first round of the 2013 MLS draft.

The Highlanders鈥 day across the strait in Port Angeles concludes with a fixture against Seattle University, another NCAA Division 1 team, tonight in a tournament that is being billed as the Rumble in the Rainforest.

Also taking part are the Pumas, Saint Martin鈥檚 College and Peninsula College.

All the games will be webcast live, for a charge, by going through the webpage of Peninsula College. The Highlanders play the Huskies at 2 p.m. and Seattle University at 6 p.m.

Meanwhile, the Highlanders announced the signing of CIS second-team all-Canadian Brett Levis of the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, a sophomore who was sa国际传媒 West second-leading scorer last season with nine goals.

The Highlanders are high on the 20-year-old鈥檚 expansive offensive game, with head coach Steve Simonson describing the former National Training Centre striker as 鈥渁 very dynamic, attacking player.鈥
