The Victoria HarbourCats have landed one of the Island鈥檚 up-and-coming young baseball players.
The HarbourCats on Wednesday added four more players for the 2017 season, including Chemainus product Zach Diewert, who is in his second season as an outfielder for Polk State College in Florida. Diewert, a graduate of the Nanaimo Pirates sa国际传媒 Premier League program, hit .338 with seven home runs and 37 RBIs to go with 26 stolen bases as a freshman for Polk State. He spent the summer in the Florida Collegiate Summer League, where he hit .284 with 14 RBIs and 16 stolen bases. Diewert is considered one of the top recruits for several NCAA Div. 1 programs.
The HarbourCats also added a trio of UC-Santa Barbara Gauchos. Infielder Nick Maroney and pitchers Radd Thomas and Liam Steigerwald are in their freshman seasons at UC-Santa Barbara. Six-foot-two Thomas pitched a no-hitter with 15 strikeouts during his senior year at Placer High School. The three Gauchos give the HarbourCats a total of four UC-Santa Barbara players for 2017, as outfielder Matt Lautz will return for his second season in Victoria.
