Intermediate ’Rocks advance; Coquitlam stops juniors’ run

It was a good news, bad news kind of day for Victoria’s younger Shamrocks lacrosse clubs on Saturday.

The Intermediate Shamrocks defeated the New Westminster Salmonbellies 17-9 at Bear Mountain Arena in Game 3 of their series to advance to the provincial championship.

The Junior Shamrocks weren’t as fortunate, losing three straight games to Coquitlam. It ended Saturday in a 10-5 setback on the mainland as the run to the Minto Cup ends in Junior A semifinal play for Victoria.

Up 4-1 and 9-7 by periods, the Intermediate Shamrocks used a big third to pull out the win.

Victoria’s top point-getter, McLean Chicquen, led the way with two goals and six assists, while Matt Hamilton had four goals and Cole Pickup addeed the hat-trick and two helpers.

Graham Winship had two goals and two assists, while Adam Jay, Daniel Smith, Nick Preston, Nate Wade, Kevin Glanfield and Jamie Jensen also scored for the winners.

Jordan Green contributed three assists and Liam Reid earned the win in goal for the Intermediate Shamrocks, who now travel to Maple Ridge over the August long weekend.

Remaining participating teams are yet to be decided.
