Tardi, who won nationals in Victoria in January, leads his team which includes third Sterling Middleton (who was also on the Canadian championship rink) and second Scott Gray and lead Derek Chandler of Victoria. The foursome will be favoured among the eight teams.
The Victoria Curling Centre will be represented by Duncan Silversides, third Zane Bartlett, second Ryan Cassidy and lead Dennis Williams.
Silversides opens play against Ramsay Murray’s Kelowna/Kamloops rink this morning at 10 and the competition carries through to Sunday’s finals.
Among the favourites on the girls’ side is Sarah Daniels of the Delta Thistle rink, along with her rink of third Catera Park, second Kim Bonneau and lead Sarah Loken. Daniels was the silver medallist at last year’s Canadian juniors.
The Island will be represented by two teams including skip Rebecca Douglas, third Julia Kresse, second Libby Elliott, lead Michaela Morrill and alternate Lauren Onushko who hail from the Parksville, Alberni Valley and Victoria regions.
Gracelyn Richards, Chanelle Meere, Keelie Duncan and Bryn Woloshyn also represent the Comox Valley Curling Centre.
The inaugural event, for curlers 17 and under as of June 30, 2016, replaces the former juvenile curling championships, whose winners advanced to the Optimists International U-18 curling event, which included several provincial champions, along with American and international teams.
The new format is a provincial event with winners advancing to a national championships featuring 12 teams from across sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½, April 18-22, in Moncton.
