Soccer under the blazing sun requires precautions and some were being taken Monday as the girls’ Triple-A high school soccer championship opened at Goudy Field in Langford and the Royal Bay turf field in Colwood. The Double-A championship is taking place in Courtenay.

Mandatory 60-second hydration breaks were taken every 20 minutes during each of the games.

The Stelly’s Stingers continued being hot in another way. The Peninsula school, coming off a run to the Ryan Cup Lower Island final, kicked-off the Triple-A tournament with two victories. The South second-seed Stingers defeated host and South fourth-seed Belmont Bulldogs 2-1 and the North third-seed Dover Bay Dolphins 2-1.

The South Island top-seed Reynolds Roadrunners also got off to a winning start with a 5-0 victory over the South Island fifth-seed Claremont Spartans and a 3-0 win over the South Island third-seed Oak Bay Breakers.

The Breakers rebounded to blank the North second-seed Cowichan Thunderbirds 4-0 while the Spartans blanked the Thunderbirds 5-0. Dover Bay upended the North Island top-seed Nanaimo District Islanders 2-0. Belmont and Nanaimo District played to a 1-1 draw in the day’s other game.

Pool play concludes with two doubleheaders today at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. at both fields. The top four teams will advance to the semifinals today at 1 p.m. on both fields. The final is at 3 p.m. at Goudy Field and the bronze medal game at Royal Bay.

The Island Double-A championship is taking place Monday and today at Mark Isfeld and G.P. Vanier secondary schools in Courtenay. The South Island top-seed St. Michaels University School Blue Jags, Brooks and the host Isfeld Ice had two wins each on the opening day for six points to lead the table. Brentwood College and Shawnigan Lake School both went 1-1 while GISS, GNS and Edward Milne went winless.

The top two teams from both the Triple-A and Double-A Island championships will advance to the sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ championships, from June 1-3, at Kelowna for Triple-A and at the University of Victoria for Double-A.

If the third-placing team in the Island championships did not play the second-placing team, it can challenge the second-place team for the second Island berth into the sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ championships.
