Island hockey championship goes to deciding game

The Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League championship will come down to Game 7 at 3:30 p.m. today at Archie Browning Sports Centre in Esquimalt.

Dylan McCann scored a pair of goals and goaltender Chris Smith stopped 28 shots to lead the host Campbell River Storm to a 4-2 victory over the Victoria Cougars at Rod Brind鈥橝mour Arena on Saturday afternoon.

The win knots up the 2016-17 league final series 3-3.

The last two victories were recorded by the home team, after the first four wins were claimed by the visiting squad.

Victoria earned the right to home-ice advantage after a 35-8-0-5 regular season record, compared with the Storm鈥檚 log of 34-12-0-2.

Sheldon Brett and Colin Blake also scored for the Storm, which led 3-0 before Owen Dalman finally put the Cougars on the scoreboard on a penalty shot at 11:00 of the third period.

Dom Kolbeins added a late Victoria goal to cut it to 3-2 before McCann collected his second to go along with the game-winner he recorded 15 seconds prior to the penalty shot.

Anthony Ciurro made 30 saves in goal for the Cougars, who are attempting to record their second straight VIJHL title and fifth in six seasons. Campbell River defeated Victoria in the championship final two years ago before the Cougars avenged that loss last season.

This year鈥檚 champion will advance to the 2017 Cyclone Taylor Cup sa国际传媒 Junior B championship tournament, taking place from April 6 to 9 in Creston.
