Island rinks punch ticket to women鈥檚 curling provincials

Island teams dominated the first sa国际传媒 women鈥檚 open playdown at the Vernon Curling Club over the weekend, thus qualifying for the provincial Scotties in Duncan, Jan. 17-22.
Island teams dominated the first sa国际传媒 women鈥檚 open playdown at the Vernon Curling Club over the weekend, thus qualifying for the provincial Scotties in Duncan, Jan. 17-22.

Skip Dailene Pewarchuk (nee Sivertson) led her Victoria Curling Centre rink, composed of third Patti Knezevic (of Prince George), second Adina Tasaka (Richmond) and lead Rachelle Kallechy (Victoria), to the A-event title, winning three straight games along the way.

Nanaimo-based skip Kesa Van Osch led her team (third is sister Kalia Van Osch, second Shawna Jensen of Tsawwassen, lead Amy Gibson of Vancouver and alternate is sister Marika Van Osch) to the B-event berth.

The third team to qualify through the C-event was Lindsay Hudyma鈥檚 split Vancouver/Victoria team that includes third Holly Donaldson of Vancouver and Victoria鈥檚 Stephanie Jackson-Baier and Carley Sandwith at second and lead, respectively.

The Hudyma team is coached by two-time world champion and Olympian Georgina Wheatcroft, while Pewarchuk is coached by Cindy Tucker, a former sa国际传媒 champion. Jim Newlands of Nanaimo guides the Van Osh rink.

The three teams join Marla Mallett鈥檚 rink and defending sa国际传媒 champion Karla Thompson in Duncan at the Glen Harper Curling Centre with the final four games of the provincial event to be televised on Shaw TV.

One more open event, set for Dec. 16-18 in Abbotsford, will decide the three remaining provincial berths.
