It was tight but effective.

The Victoria Cougars saved their season with a 1-0 victory Friday over the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League representatives, Castlegar Rebels, in the 2013 Cyclone Taylor Cup sa国际传媒 Junior B championship tournament at the Comox Valley Sports Centre.

The Vancouver Island Junior League champions, beaten 5-2 by the Pacific Junior Hockey League-champion Richmond Sockeyes in the opening game of the tournament Thursday, got a goal by Brandon Egli in the second period that stood as the game winner Friday.

Evan Roch made 27 saves for the shutout, while New York-native Jordan Gluck was almost as tough at the other end in goal for Castlegar, which opened the tournament Thursday with a 3-1 victory over the hosts and Island runner-up Comox Valley Glacier Kings.

Richmond made it a perfect 2-0 Friday night, beating Comox Valley 6-2.

Today鈥檚 games have Castlegar against Richmond at 3:30 p.m. and the Cougars-Glacier Kings matchup at 7: 30 p.m. The results of today鈥檚 games will decide the medal-round matchups for Sunday, with the bronze-medal game at 10: 30 a.m. followed by the gold-medal game at 2:30 p.m.
