Ko stays in contention after 2 rounds at Belmont

Victoria’s Naomi Ko has positioned herself nicely after two rounds of the 2013 British Columbia Junior Girls’ Championship at the Belmont Golf Course in Langley.

The 15-year-old turned in a 1-under-par 70 on Wednesday to sit two shots behind leader Jamie Oleksiew of Surrey, who is also a member of the Colorado University women’s team. The 17-year-old recorded a 69 on Day 2 of the 72-hole event after an opening 71 on Tuesday.

Ko is a member of the national development squad.

Alone in third is Alix Kong of West Vancouver (71-74), while Nanaimo’s Shirin Anjarwalla (73-76) is tied for sixth with Madison Kapchinsky of Kelowna.

Meanwhile, at the junior boy’s championship at the Revelstoke Golf Club, Sidney’s Andrew Funk moved up into a tie for third place after his 2-under-par 70.

His 142 total leaves Funk three strokes behind leader Jared Dutoit of Kimberley (71-68) and two back of Vancouver’s Trevor Yu (73-67).

Nanaimo’s Zach Anderson (72-73) and Mark Valliere (69-77) are tied for ninth and 14th, respectively.
