Late push helps Highlanders gain some revenge over Rovers

The Victoria Highlanders might not have won the Juan de Fuca Plate, but it felt like a darn good consolation prize Friday night at Centennial Stadium.

The Highlanders defeated the Surrey-based TSS Rovers 1-0 to improve to 4-7 on the United Soccer League Premier Development League season.

Victoria pulled it out in dramatic fashion late in the game, on a penalty kick at 86 minutes, after veteran attacker Blair Sturrock was fouled in the box area.

St. Michaels University School-product Callum Montgomery, out of NCAA Div. 1 North Carolina-Charlotte, made no mistake and buried the winning penalty kick with four minutes remaining in regulation time.

Because of two victories over Victoria earlier in the season, the Rovers (4-5-1) won the 2018 Juan de Fuca Plate 2-1. The Plate is the annual side competition between the two lone sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ teams.

The Highlanders’ next two games are on the road, in Seattle next Friday, and in Portland on July 11. — sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½
