The host Layritz team is one win away from locking down first place at the District 7 Little League major boys鈥 (ages 11-12) baseball championship.
Layritz thumped Central Saanich 14-2 in just 31脷2 innings to improve to 4-0 in the week-long tournament that ends on Sunday at Layritz diamonds.
In an earlier game, Hampton outlasted National 14-13 in a wild affair.
Hampton improves to 2-2, while National remains winless at 0-4. Beacon Hill and Lakehill are both 3-1, while Central Saanich falls to 0-5.
Layritz faces Lakehill in a key game today at 4 p.m. after Central Saanich plays National at 1 p.m. Hampton and Beacon Hill meet up at 7 p.m.
鈥淵ou can鈥檛 win a championship in the round-robin, but you always push yourself to finish first,鈥 Layritz manager Dave Potter said. 鈥淲e鈥檝e come ready to play. So far, so good.鈥
Owen Snyder got it started with a lead-off home run off a 3-2 count on Central Saanich starting pitcher Matthew Wong-Loewen. The next hitter, Dylan Jacques, added a double and Layritz was off to the races, scoring eight in the first inning and four more in the second, before allowing two Central Saanich runs off hits by Ethan Schwartz, J.R. Phillips and Ben Cunningham in the top of the third.
Tristan Bolger added a two-run homer in the bottom of the third for Layritz and starting pitcher Taine Clague closed it out.
