His booming drives are as long as his golf pants are loud.
John Daly, among the most bombastic players in golf history and winner of two majors, confirmed Thursday that he will play in the 2017 Pacific Links Bear Mountain Championship on the PGA Tour Champions from Sept. 11-17.
鈥淟ooking forward to grip it and rip it for y鈥檃ll at the Pacific Links Bear Mountain Championship,鈥 he said, in a typically colourful statement.
Daly, a five-time winner on the PGA Tour and one of the longest bombers off the tee in golf history, is 21st on the Charles Schwab money-earnings rankings for this year. Adding one of the most flamboyant players in the sport certainly will not hurt fan or media interest. The 51-year-old became a rookie on PGA Tour Champions last year but missed the 2016 Pacific Links because of an injury. But now Wild Thing will be coming to the wilds of Bear Mountain.
鈥淎s one of the most recognizable names in the game, [Daly] is an exciting addition to the tournament,鈥 said Bear Mountain tournament director Brad Parkins.
Daly joins a list of previously announced participants for the $2.5-million Bear Mountain seniors tour event, which includes the Charles Schwab money leader Bernhard Langer of Germany, defending Pacific Links champion Colin Montgomerie, Canadian Golf Hall of Famer Stephen Ames, and former PGA Tour regulars such as Scott McCarron, Mark Calcavecchia, Fred Funk, Jay Haas and Paul Goydos.
Montgomerie defeated McCarron in playoff holes to win last year鈥檚 Pacific Links tournament at the Bear.
