The Victoria Mavericks almost pulled off the host miracle run, before settling for the silver medal, Sunday night at the 2018 Canadian senior men’s baseball championship at Wilson’s Group Stadium at Royal Athletic Park.

The Coquitlam Angels defeated the Mavericks League side 4-2 in the all-sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ final game played before more than 1,200 fans.

A breathless run by the Mavericks fell just short, as they lost their first two games of the national tournament, before winning four straight to advance to the final.

The sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½-champion Angels got a three-run homer in the bottom of the first inning from Grant Malm and that stood as the key blow.

Winner Braeden Allemann allowed two runs on three hits, striking out two for Coquitlam. Brandon Chernoff took the loss for Victoria, allowing four runs on three hits and striking out three over five complete innings.

Victoria was held to three hits that were recorded by Austin Russell, Kevin Pockett and Duncan Blades, who was the top hitter in the tournament with a .545 average over seven games.

It was the second consecutive Canadian title for the sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ representative, following the Burnaby Bulldogs national championship in 2017, in the tournament also played in Victoria.

The Victoria Mavericks last won the national title in 2008 in Brandon, Manitoba.
