McCready hat trick leads Langley over Peterborough in Mann Cup opener

Joel McCready scored a hat trick and Athan Iannucci added two goals along with four assists to lead the Langley Thunder in a 13-12 win over the Peterborough Lakers Friday night in Game 1 of the Mann Cup.

John Grant scored five goals and two assists for the Lakers, including a hat trick in the first period that gave Peterborough a 5-2 lead after 20 minutes.

The Thunder fought back with a five-goal run to open the second period and held an 8-6 lead heading into the third.

Peterborough outshot the Thunder 16-8 in the third but Brodie MacDonald was outstanding in Langley's net.

Lewis Ratcliff added two goals and three assists for Langley and Garrett Billings had a goal and five helpers for the WLA champs.

Shawn Evans scored Peterborough's last two goals as they tried to tie it up, but couldn't get the equalizer. Evans added four assists.

MacDonald made 38 saves on 50 shots, while Tyler Carlson stopped 20 of the 33 shots for Peterborough.

Game 2 goes tonight.
